12/27/99 Bulldozers at the Gate of the Esperanza Garden

Read the Press Release

The frog shaped tree-house called El Coqui after the Puerto Rican national symbol. Folks sleep in it, phone at hand, to be ready in case of a surprise attack.

The Gardeners and Friends Gather early Monday morning, prepared to resist.

The delicate but sturdy structure of this tower made of welded rebar does not show up well on these captures from my video camera, as it is obscured by the tree limbs. It is about 25 feet high and has a metal seat adorned with golden flower petals welded to the top. The gardeners plan on having someone chain themselves to the top of it, if the cops and bulldozers come.

The welded framework of this tower was assembled in a night.

COMMENTS:

sad cities where many people don't value the necessity of green gardens, life

-------

This is a great garden! People think that just because its not $profitable$ that its not prosperous. Part of the reason for destroying the garden is to give power back to the corporation, the the state, the center of wealth. The developer works for the dollar. People self realize in places like this. It is a very dangerous place to the powers that be. It represents freedom, something that enrages those that would abolish the notion except for the fact that it allows the rich to do whatever they want... SO I SAY "MORE GARDENS!!!"

-------

Bulldoze the man.

As a collective, we need to prioritize. We need to start valuing our earth, souls, minds and bodies rather than size of our bank account. Support that which nourishes and heals, rather than that which exploits and destroys.

Love and Peace - Red

ps

I like this background. It's like gras and worms. Organic. Beatiful. Tasty.

I went to Esperanza only twice. The people were very welcoming. El Coqui was very cool. The administration and those it serves clearly do not relate to the community served by the gardens, and evidently do not care to. Where will this sadness end? Save CHARAS.
