This is the latest of my Gambiras. It has three heavy gauge plain piano wires tuned in unison stretched across an oak one-by-two that is attached to a pine plank. The piano wires are hit by the shaft of the mallets as the tongs are being hit, giving a drone background sound to the rhythms. The tongs are affixed beneath an aluminum rod screwed to the plank. This facilitates tuning, as you can adjust the length of the tongs by sliding them beneath the rod.

The plank acts as a resonating board but this instrument is made to be amplified. A microphone is attached firmly on the bottom side of the plank. When amplified the bass quality of the tongs comes out, but when unamplified it's register is more in the tenor range.

The tongs were stolen from the Large Gambira which is now resting naked, hanging on my living room wall.
