Eye Contact

The little universe of rules and tendencies surrounding eye contact is totally different than in New York. In New York, if eyes happen to lock, one of the people will usually continue looking in whatever direction seems most natural so as to make clear that the eye contact was accidental. Here, if you're looking anywhere near a person, expect them to dart their eyes right to yours and lock on. It can be unnerving to the New Yorker until he gets used to it: I still catch myself looking away to diffuse the tension of full eye contact.
