I brought along my sufboard and paddled out to the pyramid a few times, thank god for full wetsuits. Pyramid Lake is the terminus of the Truckee River, which flows from mountains that aren't that far away and are still covered with snow, so the water is coooold, at least in the winter and spring. This pic is of the edge of the pyramid, you can sort of see how mineraly it is, lots of multicolored deposits all around. What you can't see is the many little hotsprings gushing out. They don't make the water warm enough to take off your wetsuit, at least not in any area I found, but they make lots of little warm pockets. It's like when you're in a swimming pool and you suddenly pass through a suspiciously warm pocket.

Of course you did!

Paddling by this section I saw a little inlet. Hmm, let's go investigate.

Excuse the crappy colors, these water pics were taken with a disposable underwater camera (can you believe such a thing exists?), but man look at this spot. And holy shit: at the end of the inlet is a hotspring, the warmest and most bountiful flow I'd found yet. I could almost take off my wetsuit.

Does it get any more beautiful than this? And look at ol' Sue Nami, floating nice and happy.

The lake's level depends on the snowmelt so it fluctuates as much as 10 or maybe more feet between seasons and from year to year, so I suppose at some water level this hotspring might have enough flow to keep you toasty in the buff. If so, this would be one of the much more beautiful hotsprings I've touched ass to.

The long paddle home. Paddling over glassy water is super fun though, a whole new sport. As Gametone put it, it's the aquatic version of a bicycle.

But don't think Pyramid Lake is good only for glassy water: it's a little known fact that this is a world class surf spot. Here's a double overhead left peeling perfectly down the line.

Sometimes it gets a little blown out though.

Can't fool me.
