We pulled into the town of Truckee, which is at the summit of Donner Pass. We ate some overpriced food, walked among the bizarrely thronging mass of tourists, and when we fired up Van Glorious we discovered we were in the midst of Breakdown #3: she was making some weird noise and didn't have full power. Oh well, there was a hotel 100 feet away, it looked like their TVs would have ample remote controls, so we headed over, and the check-in guy was a VW nut so we got the royal treatment. He told us where to get her fixed, so in the morning we went to this garage.

Thank god for VW garages, especially ones with rivers in their back yards.

The story had a happy ending though: after another easy repair we were back on the road, and Van Glorious made it home without so much as a backfire. I think she was just sitting down in protest like a dog that doesn't want its walk to end. It took us just three days to go 350 miles, which is way faster than a wagon train, and no one had to get eaten on Donner Pass.

Man, I shoulda went with you guys. Our vehicle only had two breakdowns.

And our breakdowns weren't near as much fun! No rivers, no Mabel, not even flies, just semi-fast food.--Shannon

I feel as though we missed out too =( Our Uhaul only broke down once and it was for less than 2 hrs!! Oh well, maybe next year.

Good trip for VW breakdowns - my trusty Golf blew its head gasket, leaked fluid everywhere, had to have the fan hotwired to run constantly off the battery. Doing auto repairs in the Silver Legacy garage in Reno is a new height in post-playa bringdowns - but the buffet was great!

Sometimes I get the feeling VWs are popular with the counter-culture BECAUSE they break down all the time, demonstrating the imperfection of the technological society. Me-I like to get where I'm going. My Chevy camper-van only breaks down once a year or so.
