it's a rush, first we leave our cities and then we drive through all the countless small towns, and then we're in the vastness of the desert. all that sky and horizon makes most things seem small by comparison. and it's one of those big times of year, like our own new year.
 
this is that diamond character i've mentioned before. he's taking our first picture of the playa this year. he's not supposed to be in my passenger seat, but guess what?
 
his van broke down. that's goldie being hauled onto a flatbed for her first trek into the desert. at least we were only 110 miles from our destination. ha.
