Click here for the sounds of the brass band. India is the land of a thousand villages, and each village celebrates its own festivals each year. In these festivals, noise and color clamor to clobber your senses. Noise and color wax wide in a bright parade that passes along Mt. Abu's Nakki Lake just below the room where the Saperas danced the cobra dance. Sunlight flashes off a glittering float, laden with flower garlands, that a colorful crowd parades from the local temple.
A group of men smartly dressed in blue uniforms offer a lively musical accompaniment to the parade with trumpets, trombones, a tuba and drums. Brass bands like this one are a fixture at weddings, festivals and parades throughout India, especially in the desert fortresses and oases of Rajasthan. To hear and learn more about brass bands in Rajasthan, I highly recommend the album Disco Bhangra - Wedding Bands from Rajasthan. |
