I want a bus!

-------

Have you ever thought about how much a bus looks like a loaf of bread?

-------

Web page is a piece of art...Enjoyed it very much!

-------

This site gets an A+. Well done!

-------

great job, i love it, all of it!

-------

Loved the homes as my goal for the future is to drive my own mobile home & see the US of A!

-------

In a way, these bus owners embody the American spirit of Independence, Individuality and Innovation.
Most of us are so busy acquiring possessions, and taking care of our possessions, that we don't truly enjoy our lives.
Who was it who said that most men live lives of "quiet desperation"?
God Bless these modern pioneers!

-------

...and they all lived happily ever after

-------

Great site! Any chance of my bus getting in? It is parked now
in SoCal but I could send pictures..

Tron Man!!!

-------

When does the Red bus go up?

-------

what's with the self-groping white dancing guys?

-------

i built a house for my dog out of an old cast iron barbie bus.....he likes it. its got a bed and running water and a food dispenser and a small weedwacker engine that i drive with an old radio control.

-------

More pics! More pics!

That was awesome. Thanks for the bus tour. Greatly appreciated.

Anyone who wants to see good pictures should check out the old book "Rolling Homes." An out of print cult classic, but check the library, it's worth it.

-------

There's no better freedom then knowing that you can drive off at the drop of a hat, with no ties, no furniture moving, no packing, and you have everything you need with you.

Now I know how our pioneer ancestors felt.

"woooooowwww....I'm free."

Cool, huh?

Death to Airstream! viva the green loft mobile!

Nice Story ! I trust it will continue.Inspiration lives forever. Thanks.

-------

Keep the brakes working
Keep the oil up
Keep on keepen on
Keep on trucken

-------

Nice page! Keep up the good work!

-------

A lot of fun-thanks-keep it up and if you do-use it well.

-------

Thank you It was most entertaining. Would be nice if all those owners had email addresses just so I could share my experience with them

-------

You've convinced me! I'm buying my cousin's delivery van and converting it! Then, Las Vegas!

-------

Pleeeeeeeaaase put more pictures in here. Or links. A lot of sites don't include enough pictures of the interior, and you had plenty. Even hideously done conversions often have one or two good ideas in their floorplans that the rest of us can use. Thanks for the pics!

I truely enjoyed this little trip with Wry's liveins..I hope he keeps adding to this area!!

Oh..be sure and visit Usenet Newsgroup:

it's a perfect followup to this adventure and meet some real innovative folks like these folks.

Wry, this is the coolest collection of rv pics I have ever seen. I'm sure National Geo will be coming after you if they see these.
Great site dude.
Thanks,

-------

A bus ids better than a VW
bread box (alias Hitlers revenge).

-------

Bus livin is hard in todays modern society so we must all buy land and live communaly and start taking over all those bastardly corporations and power hungry fools who suppress us! let freedom roll!

-------

you should see what goes on in that shanes house-truck.....sick,sick,and more sickness...keep your daughters at home when those hippies come to town.

Todays browse around your site was a treat. Thanks for helping me piss away some of my work day (again). Regards from the edge, Bubba :)-'

-------

Hey, I really enjoyed the site. The buses look alot more comfortable to travel in than my `87 corrola hatchback.
How do these people make enough money to do this sort of thing all the time?

-------

This site is a goddesssend. I have loved everything, and the setup is awesome. Much love to you all. You make me want to actually live my bus fantasies!! See you on the road!! PLUR!
-Raevyn-

-------

Nice! I'm living in a converted '72 Ford box van and wrote a book about van living. Your site is great! Peace love and FREEDOM. ~Scott the Van Dweller (http://members.tripod.com/~vandweller)

-------

I'm starting to convert a 1973 winnebational lol it has only 50244 original mi. travel in it alot and thought , Yeah.........It's got to be converted! having trouble with the floor plan for the bathroom with the wheel humps. got any ideas?
Zie38@yahoo.com

-------

One note on bus living. Schoolbuses are notoriously difficult to insure. In some cases impossible. An easier way is to build one on a truck chassis, or go the way VanDweller did, using a delivery van. Just register it as a van, and neglect to mention the bed, sink, and toilet you added. ;-)

Hi

WONDERFUL STORY ON THESE BUSES

-------

I wish I still had my '59 ford step van. The guy I bought it off of converted it for camping in at moto-cross races. I started to restore it but, those 9 to 5 pressures took over and it sat in the backyard for 13 years as a storage shed until I jnked it 3 years ago. If only I had seen your site sooner. I really enjoyed it and hope you keep adding to it! Keep up the good work!

-------

hello

-------

i like buses

-------

Great bus pictures! I never knew they could look this good!

-------

Peace and love in your
hearts in your bus,
when simplicity is
accepted, there is never
a fuss

-------

Really, really cool

-------

Yeah, wht do you do for a living to be able to afford that kind of conversion?

-------

lop

-------

I think once a person gets use to living rent free and still has a job, he or she can use their money in all kinds of positive ways. Save for a new engine, new clothes, good food and be able to help out a friend who is down and out.

-------

Live in a van, or a bus or a geodesic dome tent covered with polyethelene plastic and get a plan going, be intrepid! There are all kinds of ways to be a SUCCESSFUL nomad. Do it smart, safely and with a plan that will save you money and get a good vision going of your future!

-------

Jesus said, I am the way, the truth and the life. No man can come to the Father except by me. When all is said and done, in order to live forever you gotta know Jesus. Talk to Him today!

-------

I got a bus and I'm doin it. Nice show people. check out http://www.mrsharkey.com for more of the same thing.

-------

Fun way to kill a half hour browsing! Brings back memories, too. My youngest (now 19) was BORN in a housebus I built. Always wondered what happened to the beast (the bus, not my son). Be sure to check out mrsharkey.com for some more cool pics.

-------

nice work, have a 65 dodge a100 van, short wheel base no windows 283 v8 auto can be reached at pikachu@ilostmyjob.com

What ever happened to the actual gypsies? When I was a kid ,gypsies would show up in Seattle once in a while selling picnic tables out of big trucks.Apparently they travelled around the country full-time. I guess they all went legit.

We've been living in a converted bus for three years. Gave up a 4-bedroom house to do it. No regrets! We love it! Had another 15 years ago. Lived in it three years with six kids. Just couldn't get it out of our systems.

-------

nice

-------

I live in my truck in NZ and will for as much of my life as I am able. Be kind all the time.

-------

I have known many people with bus homes. Living the way they have is a solid commitment to the nomad lifestyle, which is as old as the golden hills of California.

-------

MMMORE!!!!!!!

-------

I can relay that.

MORE!

Keep the stories comeing, If you need help colecting pictures or rolling homes, and stories, then email me. I live on the west coast and I see them rolling thru town every week. They stay a while, and then move on.

I've done it, seen the USA coast to coast in a 73 Dodge. It was a great as you imagine, but holy beast what a hassle to keep it mobile. Everything wanted to lay down.

loved every minute of it!!

especially the '46 gmc!! too cool

-------

Great Website! This link was passed to me by my survival elist, and is just what I was looking for to get some ideas. I have an old slide on camper that is verrrry heavy and one crank is broke so I can't get it on the truck. I was considering redoing the inside so it wasn't so heavy and so it was more convenient in layout. Thanks for the ideas.

-------

Awesome site!!! It has been my dream to open a business that specializes in converting old buses and remodeling classic campers, customizing to the customer's tastes, and doing it cheaply. I just picked up a job as an apprentice RV technician at K and C RV in Longmont, CO. I start Monday 8/01/01. My dream is closer to reality. Keep up the good work! C.T.

-------

im gonna live in a bus some day.............

-------

The coolest rig I ever seen wuz a Ryder truck. It still looked exactly like a Ryder Truck from the outside, but the inside was totally styled out in hardwood. It had a lil copper sink converted from a flower pot an solar power an everything. Plus, delivery vans that look like delivery vans don't get hassled nearly as much.

BOOBALOO !

-------

Yep,I had one of these school bus babies that I got for a Dollar (for tax purposes, they wanted to give it to me)in the good old days, and sure nuf the DallasPigs could not leave me alone cause of the DrSuess stuff painted on the outside. But you could park most anywhere for 24 hour parking. I loved it, except baking my brain in the TexasHeat! Maybe one day, I can buy NewMexico and get Groovy again and cruise around and see my place without any trouble from DaMan. Keep-up the good work, try someplace besides Cali....

-------

i live in a bus that was once filled every day with school children.

-------

At six foot four I don't think I'd fit too well, but that is one great looking ride. Two summers ago I saw an old mini motorhome that had been built on a streched corvair chasis. That was a very different looking ride too! Keep yours shiney side up.

-------

Very cool website. Rarely do I go through all pages of someone's website. Thanks for your time and effort.

-------

Thanks for a really interesting insight into bus conversions. I'm a bus enthusiast here in the UK, and a member of the Club BUSES WORLDWIDE. My area of interest is American vehicles, so if any fellow enthusiasts would like to contact me, perhaps we can arrange to exchange information. Info on any videos on Greyhound or Trailways would be really useful. ian.neden@c-b-e.co.uk

My first apartment was a dodge van/camper. Then I "grew-up", married, had kids, got a job, (not neccessilarly in that order). Then bought the house with the 30 yr mortage. The American Dream?? Well, we sold the house and all of us are now living in a bus conversion. We can change our yard anytime! We homeschool, so the even the dreaded schoolboard don't mind! Now THIS is the American Dream!

-------

Love your web site. Since I was a teenager, I always dreamt about living in a bus and traveling around the country. I'm now 48 and sites like yours keep me thinking about creating my own mobile retreat. Thanks for taking the time to show us dreamers how others have turned their dreams into reality.

-------

In the "not-too-distant future" everyone will be living like this, in super-efficient busses that recycle all wastes and have zero-emissions. Some will float through the sky, some will travel on the ground the old-fashioned way, but everybody will be touring all the time to interesting places.

You know I haven't seen too many black people in busses, let alone RV's. So you are talking SHIT & I think you are visiting the wrong site to express your RACIST, PIG headed views. (I wouldn't doubt, that you believe evolution is truth. That "theory" states that there is "lower" & "higher" races. Hitler was an "evolutionist") P.S. I've smelt some pretty stinky hippies, but thats no reason to kill someone over. I've also seen some pretty stylin' black people...REALLY classy. I love all people...well maybe not you.

I have had them all: Ford delivery van/surfmobile, VW busses, camper van, housetruck on International flatbed, 35 ft. Chevy bus with raised roof, mini-housetruck on stretched Chevy crewcab and now a diesel, Ford window van (extra long) for urban, stealth camping and runs to Alaska and Baja. For me, simple means better and more miles. Diesel means way cheaper and less down time in the shop. For income on the road, bite the bullet and get into network marketing. It's perpetual income. I hate to rain on anyones parade, but after owning a Class B (camper van) for a few years they are nice for weekend jaunts....beyond that I would go CRAZY living in one, unless I had to travel for a living or something. Something that small is just not practical for day to day living. It was nice to have though, it was my only ride for close to a year. On my lunch breaks at work I would just go to my van and eat in peace at the "dining room" table while the radio played. Nice. My next dream is to own a nice Chinook class C motor home, something you can move around in.

Cool site, interesting vehicles. This year will be my first snowbird escape from the frozen North. Converting my $600 1985 passenger van for a solo trip to the Gulf states for some seriously frugal cold weather avoidance.

Good luck to all

Thanks for the interesting pics!! PA

life is a gamble... a boat may sink (not very likely at all....you're more likely to plummet off the side of a canyon if you fall asleep at the wheel) but you'll never drive that thing to Tahiti or Australia or cross the Atlantic to Europe. All the great cities of the world are port cities and the wind is free

Fuck yeah!!!

Yikes! if you're worried about being bulletproof you need to find a better place to park!!!!!!

What makes anyone think a bus or van is bulletproof?

Liked your Yellow Coach (GM Coach) PG2901 conversion feature. I had a used TDH 4507 fron A C Transit's predecessor in Oakland I had bought from a used bus dealer and was going to convert it but it was in restorable condition and i wanted to find a bus museum for it. I had a gutted TDM4512 from a friend but he wanted it back and I made a profit out of his deal, getting back what I paid him as well as his fixing the hydraulic clutch linkage of my '63 International Harvester CM80 Metro-Mite that had been re-bodied aft of the cab front (not a good idea with its unibody construction) and its tire patched. My first car was a '59 International Harvester AM80 that my stepfather had converted into a good housecar and lived in for a couple of years before I bought it. I was fortunate to have it several times and should have gone ahead with my plans to put in an air-cooled Diesel engine and mating five speed as well as heavier duty axles and maybe a sub-chassis frame. I regret giving in to the ol' lady and buying a new car (read=lemon) and selling it. If anyone wants to buy a used bus skip the RTS, which was Yellow Coach's worst product and prompted GM to sell the company in the '80's. also skip the Flxible 870 as well as most newer types as they are a labyrinth of electronics and headaches with glorified automobile type automatic transmissions. A truck-chassis school bus or a Crown or aGillig Bros. is a better bet if you want a newer bus to convert. Many have made theirown Wanderlodge out of a used Bluebird and ended up with just as good a camper at a fraction of the cost of a new Wanderlodge or had a great artist coach at a lower price. For a smaller job, check out Step/Value vans or Olson Kerbmasters which come on a variety of chassis. A stick shift is the way to go, as they are less prone to failure and if a stick trans does start going out you can still drive it to the shop instead of paying expensive towing bills! Also, men dont need power steering. Those new motorhomes with a steering wheel no bigger than one off a go-kart are scary as some of the poeple I've seen driving them couldnt handle them if the power steering failed on the road. Even with a real man at the wheel, the steering wheel or stering gear could break if turned without the power steering system working properly. I liked the GM/Yellow front end design, especially with the air vents atop the windshields on the transit models as well as on the front between the headlights.
I plan to get another bus and convert it in the near future and am enjoying my '70 Microbus with its fold-out back seat. The Audi Eurovan and its new concept model just dont make it. An old panel truck from the '70's or before is better if you want to sit behind a dog house and if you want a water-cooled forward-control van, skip the Vanagon and go for a pre-'68 Econoline.
Hope I enlightened you as much as I enjoyed your pictures and description of your coach.
The old Busjockey.

Please pardon my typos in my above comments, as I am still a two-finger hunt-and peck-man.

-------

I think you made a better choice by using the Y.C. Jimmy over the Clipper. I looked at a '45 Clipper and under it as well. The front axle of my TDH 4507 was a man's arms and the Clipper's looked like a 97 lb. weakling's compared to it. The Flx. is probably a lighter coach than the Yellows and maybe a bit more streamlined in the front but the curved glass introduced in '46 is hard to replace if you can get a windshield at all. Gm had a curved windshield on their parlor coaches where the flat unit went and then went to a non-recessed unit. I prefer the recessed one myself and the optional vents on top of the frame. Like to see more.

looking at this and similar websites offer a great deal of comfort to me. my partner and our 9 month old are in the final stages of our conversion. paying $1500 for the 78 chevy c-60 and maybe another $500 for wood and supplies, it makes a damn cheap home. now we can spend our money on buying land on the west coast when we get there. can't wait. what a community that converted bus dwellers have. peace, love, and kind journeys to all of you who do the same. if you see the sunflower express, knock and come on in to say hi. should be on the road in december of 2002. great christmas present to ourselves in my eyes. we both can't wait to move in. i hope to meet all the kind portable home folk along the path of our many journeys in it. love humanity.

Inspiring! I currently pay $1800 per month to rent in Topanga Canyon. Ridiculous! I'm not free. I could buy a couple of acres for one month's rent. January will be the last time. My wife, son, dog and cat, and I are going mobile. This life of quiet desperation must end. I'm just working to pay rent. I have no time for travel, music, art, or family. Luckily, I didn't wait until the age of retirement to tack back MY FREEDOM! See ya on the road. Tera

I agree with one commentor --it's a Flxible bus of maybe 1939 or 1940. After 1940 I believe the windows were slanted and looked better. I don't think any GMC bus ever had a scoop like that at the rear.
